The film is based on the memoir, ‘Fly a Little Higher: How God Answered a Mom’s Small Prayer’, which was written by Zach’s mother, Laura Sobiech. Zach died when he was 18 years old of a rare bone cancer, osteosarcoma, in May 2013. Before he passed, he formed a band, A Firm Handshake, and recorded a hit single ‘Clouds’. The music video for the song features his journey and brings awareness to the cancerous bone tumor that develops in children. Since its release, it has had over 14.3 million viewers on YouTube. At Zach’s request, proceeds from the song were to be donated to funds which support osteosarcoma research, helping researchers find better treatments to prevent and cure this fatal disease.

‘Clouds’ will follow a 17 year old Zach as he goes through his senior year of high school, showing the audience his journey as he steers through obstacles that come his way when it comes to love, friendship, family and leaving behind a musical legacy. The film will star Fin Argus (Brat’s Total Eclipse) as Zach and he will be joined with a cast that includes: Sabrina Carpenter (The Hate U Give), Madison Iseman (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle), Thomas Everett Scott (13 Reasons Why) and Neve Campbell (House of Cards). The film is being produced and directed by Justin Baldoni, who is the co-founder of Wayfarer Studios, making this his first film under the Studios’ name. Baldoni stated that he fell in love with Zach’s spirit and story when he made a short documentary about his life while he was alive. Before he passed, Baldoni made a promise to the musician that he’d do whatever he could to make sure the world heard his music. Now the director is teaming up with Disney to share Zach’s story and music with the world. The film is actually the first film buy for Disney+’s Global Content Team, which Ricky Strauss, president of Content & Marketing at Disney+, says “ ‘Clouds’ is a fantastic fit for Disney+ and our global audiences,” and adds that the film and its message “shows us the power of optimism, music, and human connection.” At a time like this, it feels like that’s the kind of story we could all use right now.
