The 100 From The Ashes Review

The CW‘s The 100: Season 7, Episode 1: From The Ashes: is the beginning of the highly anticipated return of a series finale.

When I think of The 100, there are a few things that instantly come to mind. I think of togetherness, fight, and leadership to name a few. For characters, I think of Clarke, (Eliza Taylor) Marcus, Thelonious, Monty, and Jasper. Most of those characters are gone, so this first episode didn’t necessarily give me that The 100 feel. The structure and plot of the episode did, But I think the absence of those founding characters is a big loss for me. However, the characters like Bellamy, (Bob Morley) Octavia, (Marie Avgeropoulos) and Raven (Lindsey Morgan) will give me enough feel to be entertained.

Opening Scene

The first scene opens with a bang, and reminds me of the nonstop action this series brings to the table. The 100 always does a great job at keeping the viewer hooked, and this episode is no exception. The whole idea of the anomole is very confusing to me and I don’t really know where they are going with it. I almost feel as though they dove in too quick, but it’s easy to follow along with the smooth camera work and fast moving action.

Indra

Indra (Adina Porter) was always looking for ways to take lead in previous seasons. For this season, I have a feeling she is going to want complete control, possibly having something to do with the flame. I’m not convinced she has the same goals as Clarke, but time will only tell.

Inner Conflict

The 100 wouldn’t be the same without some good old inner conflict, which Murphy (Richard Harmon) and Miller (Jarod Joseph) display early on. Murphy has always been one to start trouble, and I am keeping my eye on him this season.

Sanctum

The premise of this series shows how hard it really is to colonize an area for the first time and the challenges that come with it. Sanctum seems to be their last hope for survival on land, and keeping the peace will not come easy. I’m interested to see how the rest of the season plays out in this aspect, and if they will face similar issues they saw on Earth. Since there is no clear leader on Sanctum anymore, things will get dicey and that is simply what makes this series so enjoyable- the overcoming of problems and the drama that comes with it.

Clarke’s Breaking Point

What Clarke endured is something that would leave a person damaged- watching her mother turn into someone else and killing her is not something easy to live with. She seems to be handling it well, but ignoring what has happened will only build up the pain inside her. When she loses control in the palace with Russell, this becomes evident. She beats him and eventually knocks him out, and accidentally causes a fire that burns the whole palace down. I saw this coming, figuring what Russell did to Abby and how Clarke has been concealing it. I’m interested to see how this grief affects Clarke’s decision making throughout the series. In the final scene, she explains she wants Russell dead, after she explained she doesn’t want to take “an eye for an eye”.

Russell’s Fate

This twist of Sheidheda taking over Russell Prime is a great way to start the series. It opens up endless possibilities relating to Madi and will make creating peace in Sanctum so much harder.

Final Thoughts

I thought this episode was a good opener for the final season. We get a gist of what is going on, and a whiff of some action. Although it feels new and not quite like The 100, there is potential and I have no doubt this final season will leave fans satisfied.
