Twins Sequel Triplets Is a No-Go
The proposed sequel to the 1988 comedy Twins, which was called Triplets, has gotten the ax and filmmaker Jason Reitman is at least partly to blame. Arnold Schwarzenegger has confirmed during his press junket to promote his new TV series, “FUBAR,” that Triplets is a project which is not going to happen. The idea of bringing back Schwarzenegger and DeVito to screwball comedies sounded like a lot of fun. Eddie Murphy was once said to have ties to the project but then Tracy Morgan was brought in instead. The plot was going to revolve around a long lost third brother to Schwarzenegger and DeVito’s “twin” characters. Morgan was slated for that potential role. Now, however, the whole concept is getting axed mostly because of the original film’s director’s son.

When director Ivan Reitman died in February 2022, a little piece of his proposed future work did too. Reitman was slated to helm a project called Triplets. However, his son, Jason, didn’t like the idea, according to Schwarzenegger and now the project is pretty much dead in the water. Schwarzenegger says he has other ideas about a potential project he could do with DeVito. However, it certainly won’t be Triplets. Schwarzenegger also ruled out the possibility of a Conan sequel or reboot coming into fruition any time soon. It seems that Schwarzenegger is trying to revitalize his heroic action star image these days but playing in The Terminator films wasn’t doing what was needed to be done at the box-office to secure the actor drawing in the crowds that he used to in the 1980’s and 1990’s. Terminator: Dark Fate from 2019 may have made close to $200 million overseas but, domestically, it barely cracked $62 million. That’s why a comedy could have been just what Schwarzenegger needed to rejuvenate his career in terms of box-office grosses. Some people like Jason Reitman thought the idea for Triplets wasn’t such a good one, though, and it’s easy to see his side of the story. It felt like the premise would have needed to be handled with kid gloves to avoid offending people and 35 years was an awful long time to wait for a sequel. Only die-hard Schwarzenegger and DeVito fans may actually remember Twins and Kelly Preston, the female lead from the original, has since passed away. While Jason Reitman may have rained on Schwarzenegger’s parade for now, Netflix’s “FUBAR” could be just the type of series to bring the actor back into the limelight without industry insiders keeping a close eye on those box-office grosses. Triplets will thus rest in peace as a project which will probably never be. Leave your thoughts on Jason Reitman pulling the plug on the Triplets movie below in the comments section.
