Ryan Kiera Armstrong No Longer in “Competition” for the Razzies
The Golden Raspberry Awards have withdrawn 12-year-old child actress, Ryan Kiera Armstrong‘s name from the slate of “nominees.” The Razzies had nominated young child star, Ryan Kiera Armstrong for Worst Actress for Firestarter (admittedly one of the year’s worst films) but have since taken her out of the competition because it was deemed disrespectful to young stars under 18 years of age such as Armstrong. The head of the Razzies, John Wilson, offered an apology to Armstrong for the disrespectful decision to include her in the category of Worst Actress considering her age. There is now a designated age for performers to be considered for the dishonor which is 18 plus.

Firestarter, a horror movie remake, crashed and burned at the box-office earning a mere $9 million at the domestic box-office and earning a poor “C-” CinemaScore grade to boot. It wasn’t necessarily Armstrong’s fault that the movie was a bomb. Luckily, for the young actress, the Razzie nom has been withdrawn and the actress can move forward with her career and try to begin anew with her next project. She already starred in a movie this year called The Old Way which co-stars Nicolas Cage. Other movies nominated for Razzies awards include films which have been nominated for Academy Awards such as Blonde and Elvis. Blonde got a Worst Picture nomination (the film sported an Oscar-nominated turn by Ana de Armas) and Tom Hanks was nominated for Worst Supporting Actor for the Academy Award nominated picture, Elvis. In the past, other child stars have been nominated for Razzies, including Macaulay Culkin who received the dishonor for a slew of films that came out in 1994, including the long forgotten Getting Even with Dad and Richie Rich. While the Razzies have no problem taking on Oscar winner Jared Leto for his performance in Morbius (for which he received a Worst Actor nod) and screen veteran Sly Stallone for the disappointing Samaritan, the inclusion of a child star just left a bad taste in everybody’s mouths and, now, Armstrong, is free of responsibility for the failure that was Firestarter, at least as far as the Razzies are concerned. The Razzies is an organization that is meant to call out stars who make bad decisions. The many times honored Diane Keaton even got a Razzies nom this year for Mack & Rita which was OK but far from her best work. Poor Bryce Dallas Howard made the cut for Worst Actress for her work in Jurassic Park Dominion. Ryan Kiera Armstrong hopefully will not feel too bad regarding the dishonor that briefly came about with the Razzies. She still could have a bright future ahead of her as an actress with the Razzies nod being swept under the carpet.
