Kevin Costner/Whitney Houston Film The Bodyguard Set To Be Remade

Warner Bros. has decided to remake their 1992 smash hit film The Bodyguard and has enlisted Matthew Lopez to write the script. When 1992’s blockbuster movie The Bodyguard made over $100 million at the domestic box-office, Hollywood was pleasantly surprised. That movie, which had arguably the best selling film soundtrack of all-time, starred Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston in the picture’s lead roles. Now, Tony-nominated playwright Matthew Lopez has been chosen to write a new vision of the story for a screenplay to be turned into a film.

The cast of the upcoming remake has not been set yet though there have been some names dropped as potential stars of the film. Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson were revealed as possible stars as well as Channing Tatum and Cardi B. No cast has been selected, though, and these actors are just possibilities at this point. Lopez is known and highly acclaimed for his play The Inheritance which was regarded as “the most important American play of the century.” Lopez is also currently co-writing a musical version of the legendary 1959 Marilyn Monroe movie Some Like It Hot. The original The Bodyguard received mixed to negative reviews when it was released and currently has just a 34% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, that movie was fueled at the box-office by a wonderful soundtrack and audiences seemed to like it more than critics awarding it a “B+” CinemaScore grade. This movie was about a popular singer (Whitney Houston) who falls in love with her Secret Service agent bodyguard (Kevin Costner). Lawrence Kasdan, writer of the original film, will be producing the remake alongside Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich. Lin has been attached to the upcoming project since 2011. This new film version will have a lot to live up to when considering the quality of the songs in the original movie. “I Will Always Love You” was the most popular song in the picture and two of the film’s other songs were nominated for Academy Awards. If anyone is up to the task of re-inventing this old film, it’s Lopez. His distinguished The Inheritance opened on Broadway in 2019 and it has received many different major awards. Lopez has also been working on a movie adaptation of the book Leading Men which is about Tennessee Williams. The Bodyguard was a project that was such a big surprise hit at the box-office that its performance had stunned box-office analysts back then. It won’t take much to improve upon the quality of the mediocre film itself but matching the award-winning music from the movie will be a challenge that Lopez will most probably happily accept. No release date has been set for the new project as of yet. Leave your thoughts on Warner Bros. remaking The Bodyguard below in the comments section.
