Netflix Users Experience Connectivity Issues

Weeks into the coronavirus pandemic, one of the world’s top streaming services, Netflix, has connectivity issues in the United States and Europe for about an hour.

On Wednesday, March 25th, viewers across the globe were experiencing connectivity issues for about an hour while trying to stream on Netflix. With the markets crashing, businesses closing their doors, and people around the world quarantining in order to stay safe and not be in danger of coming in contact with COVID-19, streaming services are being used more than ever. Netflix, servicing approximately 170 million users worldwide, was giving several users an error message when trying to use the streaming service. This happened in numerous scattered locations in both the United States and Europe, but the streaming platform was fixed within the hour after several reports showed up online of customer’s complaining about the error messages being received. The most common error message being ‘Netflix Error HTP-500”, which according to Netflix’s help center means “it typically points to a network connectivity issue that is preventing your device from reaching the Netflix service”. With everyone using Netflix, amongst other streaming services, while having to pass the time while staying in doors, it isn’t a shock that maybe there was just way too many people using it at once. As usage of video streaming services surges, Netflix recently even had to reduce their picture quality to reduce their user traffic. Netflix hasn’t confirmed the exact reasoning behind the 1 hour outage but with everything going on in the world today, one can only guess that it’s due to the excessive usage in several households during this global quarantine. Netflix’s support center is even backed up at the moment due to their employees having to work from home for the last few weeks and counting. With more people starting to work remotely or being let go from their jobs each week, the user traffic for all streaming services could only increase and we can possibly foresee more issues while watching video content from the comfort of our own homes.
