Mulan will be released on Disney+ this September

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures’ live-action Mulan (2020) adaptation will no longer be released in U.S. theaters. Mulan will instead be released exclusively on Disney+ for a viewing price of $29.99 on September 4, 2020. During that debut window, Mulan will be simultaneous released in select movie theaters in select regions around the world (Canada, Australia, New Zealand and a number of countries in Western Europe). There is speculation that Disney still intends a Chinese theatrical release for the film which is why Mulan is not being released online in China. Regarding the online release, if every Disney+ subscriber orders Mulan, that will place the fantasy military film in 60.5 million homes (Disney+’s current number of subscribers).

Walt Disney Company’s CEO Bob Chapek had this to say about Mulan being released on Disney+: “We see this as an opportunity to bring this incredible film to a broad audience, currently unable to go to movie theaters, while also further enhancing the value and attractiveness of a Disney+ subscription with this great content.” Mulan‘s production budget is $200 million and a film’s traditional marketing budget is half of its production budget, give or take. That brings Mulan’s total cost to about $300 million. The premium $29 price tag can be seen as a ‘household’ price tag and will help Disney recoup some of the production and marketing budget for the film. If Mulan were to sit on the shelf for another year, profit (profit  = revenue – cost) that Disney could potentially be making from the film would go unrealized. I can’t imagine movie theater chain owners are pleased by this move by Disney (they weren’t with Trolls World Tour) but Disney has made them so much money over the years that after this announcement, they have been relatively silent (the one-off statement by Disney helping to assuage their fears – and allowing them to save face by not seeking retribution). Movie theater chain owners know Disney is one of the great sources of their past, present, and future income streams.

Plot Synopsis

Mulan‘s plot synopsis: based on the poem The Ballad of Mulan, “Acclaimed filmmaker Niki Caro brings the epic tale of China’s legendary warrior to life in Disney’s MULAN, in which a fearless young woman risks everything out of love for her family and her country to become one of the greatest warriors China has ever known. When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honored warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation … and a proud father.”
