Craymer says she was working on a third film before the COVID-19 pandemic shut everything down, and she subsequently got set back. “I think one day there will be another film, because there’s meant to be a trilogy, you see,” Craymer elaborated on in a recent interview. “I know Universal would like me to do it.”

In a recent interview in Collider, Amanda Seyfried (who played Sophie in both the original and the sequel), expressed her excitement and her reservations about a third Mamma Mia. Seyfried also said she thought the second film was “just perfect”, as it was “a better story, because [the characters] had something to grow on”. Craymer sort of has an answer for Seyfried’s concerns, as she says she would want to incorporate the new songs that ABBA has written for a virtual performance into the film. Nothing has been officially confirmed yet by Universal, the studio behind the previous two musicals. However, if box office performance alone guaranteed greenlights, we could be hearing of one sometime soon. The original Mamma Mia! amassed a worldwide gross of $609M back in 2008 on a $52M budget. The sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, while not quite as lucrative, still pulled in a profitable $395M worldwide on a $75M budget.
