Kingpin Sequel is Moving Forward with The Farrelly Brothers
Peter and Bobby Farrelly will be behind an upcoming sequel to the much loved 1996 comedy Kingpin. When Peter Farrelly directed Green Book in 2018, the film walked away with an Oscar win for Best Picture. But, now, Peter is returning to comedy with his brother Bobby. The filmmaking legends behind 1998’s mega-smash There’s Something About Mary actually have a sequel in development for a film they did prior to that box-office sensation. Kingpin, which fared less well in theaters back in 1996, received rave reviews at the time of its release with it even getting two thumbs up from Siskel & Ebert. Over the years, the film has won many fans and now Village Roadshow Pictures is going to be producing a sequel.

The original Kingpin was a fun, gross-out comedy with an all-star cast that included Oscar-nominated actors Woody Harrelson and Bill Murray. Whether or not they will be returning in the sequel is up in the air at the current time. However, it has been learned that the Farrelly Brothers will be, at the very minimum, producing the sequel. Over the years, Peter and Bobby Farrelly have been recognized for their inclusion of people with disabilities in their films. In late 2019, they were presented with the Morton E. Ruderman Award in Inclusion. One of their films, in particular, Stuck on You managed to make audiences laugh out loud while being sensitive to the main characters who were conjoined twins. It is unclear as of yet if the new Kingpin sequel will include characters with disabilities but the Farrelly Brothers are noted for their sensitivity to that particular community. In 2014, Peter and Bobby Farrelly actually made a sequel to one of their earlier hits from 1994, Dumb and Dumber. Even though it came 20 years after the smash film, the sequel proved successful at the box-office earning $86 million domestically. That should give the filmmakers a lot of hope that there will be an audience for the upcoming Kingpin sequel. The original Kingpin was a comedy set in the world of professional bowling. Woody Harrelson played a pro bowler who loses his hand in a freak incident and decides to help an Amish bowler (Randy Quaid) get the fame he so rightfully deserves. Bill Murray played Harrelson’s character’s arch nemesis. Vanessa Angel was Harrelson’s love interest. It will be great to see a sequel to Kingpin even if it has been 25 years in the making and we can look forward to more details on the production being revealed in the not-too-distant future.
