“The version of the film that was screened at Toronto was very promising, and after working with the filmmakers and Mark Wahlberg on a revised cut, we feel it has now reached its full potential,” said Mark Gill, president and CEO of Solstice Studios, in a press statement. The new release is optimally timed to correspond with 2020’s delayed awards season. Solstice acquired the movie, which was titled Good Joe Bell at the time, at TIFF last September for $20 million and had long planned for a theatrical release during awards season. The film is based on the true story of a father who set out on a cross-country walk to raise awareness following his son’s death in 2013. Along the way, Joe Bell (Whalberg) must come to grips with his own prejudices and his strained relationship with his son, who is played by Reid Miller. Connie Britton, Maxwell Jenkins and Gary Sinise also star. The film was directed by Wahlberg and produced by Reinaldo Marcus Green based on an original screenplay by Diana Ossana and Larry McMurtry, the Oscar winning screenwriters of Brokeback Mountain. “This is a story that is very important to me personally. Joe Bell is a man who didn’t understand certain things about the world until he was faced with them in his own life — as a father. As a parent myself, I know how much fatherhood can change a man,” Wahlberg said in a separate statement. Whalberg recently starred in Instant Family (2018) and Spenser Confidential (2020). Daniela Taplin Lundberg, Riva Marker, Eva Maria Daniels, Cary Fukunaga, Ryan Ahrens, Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson serve as producers on Joe Bell, while the executive producer credits go to Jill Ahrens, Ben Renzo, Derrick Brooks, Paris Kassidokostas-Latsis, Terry Dougas, Jean-Luc De Fanti, Jake Gyllenhaal, Diana Ossana, Larry McMurtry, Peter Pastorelli and Uwe R. Feuersenger. Argent Pictures, Endeavor Content, Hercules Film Fund, Rhea Films, Stay Gold Features, Nine Stories Productions, VisionChaos, Parliament of Owls and Wahlberg/Levinson serve as co-producers. The movie is the second theatrical release for Solstice after of Derrick Borte‘s Unhinged starring Russell Crowe. Leave your thoughts on the new release below in the comments section.
