David Benioff & D.B. Weiss exit Star Wars Trilogy for Netflix Deal
Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have exited their deal with LucasFilm and The Walt Disney Company to create a new Star Wars trilogy. The proposed trilogy was supposed to be the first post-Skywalker Star Wars trilogy. The first of the Benioff and Weiss Star Wars films was going to hit theaters in 2022, presumably December of 2022. Obviously, that is not happening anymore. David Benioff & D.B. Weiss released this statement about their decision to leave a galaxy far, far away:

With a purported nine-figure deal from Netflix (rumored to be $250 Million) and all that entailed, something had to give. In this case, it was Benioff and Weiss’ February 2018 Star Wars trilogy deal. Following this David Benioff and D.B. Weiss news coming to light, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy released this brief statement: There is a tiny bit of shade in Kennedy’s rejoinder i.e “busy schedule” to David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’ statement but who can blame her? Everything was set for David Benioff and D.B. Weiss to usher in the new era of Star Wars and now its not going to happen. Kennedy was smart enough, though, to leave the door open to Benioff and Weiss, should they choose to return to Star Wars at some point in the future. Lucky for all parties concerned, and most-likely because Disney saw this coming, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is developing his own Star Wars film. My guess is that this film will now be fast-tracked and will potentially take the release slot of the first Benioff and D.B. Weiss Star Wars film.
