Legendary Actresses Unite to Film Book Club 2 in Italy

Diane Keaton, Candice Bergen, Jane Fonda and Mary Steenburgen are headed to Italy to shoot an eagerly awaited sequel, Book Club 2: The Next Chapter. When Book Club opened back in 2018, the film, which featured four old-time distinguished actresses, stunned the movie world when it grossed an astonishing $68 million domestically. That Paramount Pictures release was all the more exciting for the actresses involved given that it was released around the time summer blockbusters typically open. Those great returns made it clear that character-driven movies aren’t so hard to sell to audiences during that period if they’re actually appealing to the older female movie-going crowd. Book Club earned an “A-” CinemaScore grade from audiences although the Rotten Tomatoes score was just 54% positive. A sequel called Book Club 2: The Next Chapter is now in the works and the leads of the picture are going to be in Italy to film it.

Diane Keaton has always been a legend in her own right from her Annie Hall days all the way to Something’s Gotta Give. Keaton’s roles always have a relatable feel to them and that was even evident in her performance in the less than stellar 2019 comedic film Poms which cast her against Jacki Weaver and Rhea Perlman. Candice Bergen is best known for her turn on “Murphy Brown” which aired for 10 seasons. Bergen delivered a heartfelt turn in the original Book Club which kept audiences invested in her character. Jane Fonda needs no introduction and remains one of the most influential actresses of her generation. She is best known for her turns in the early 1970’s and early 1980’s in Klute, 9 to 5 and On Golden Pond although she also starred in the 2007 film, Georgia Rule, where she played opposite Lindsay Lohan. Mary Steenburgen recently appeared in a great turn in the Oscar-nominated Nightmare Alley and is best known for her older roles in Parenthood, and a couple of the Back to the Future pictures. She simply stole the show in Book Club. Returning male cast members Andy Garcia, Don Johnson and Craig T. Nelson from Paramount’s 2018 box-office hit will be joining the acclaimed actresses in the new Book Club sequel. Giancarlo Giannini, Hugh Quarshie (Breeders) and Vincent Riotta are going to be welcomed as new additions to the cast. The original Book Club centered on an older women’s book club where the book of choice was 50 Shades of Grey and the story featured in the book ended up changing these women’s lives forever. While we’re still waiting on news what these fabulous four women will be reading in the new picture, it seems to be one of the most eagerly awaited movies for audiences in the age demographic that the film is targeted for. The beauty of this franchise is that it appeals to viewers of all ages and is easily accessible to any movie-goer looking for laughs.
