Academy Awards 2020 Predictions

With the 2020 Academy Awards airing tonight, these are my predictions for some of the winners of the 2020 Oscars. I have not seen every film that has came out in 2019, which is why I am not giving a prediction for every category present in the awards ceremony. It would not be fair to the films that I have not seen yet.

Academy Awards 2020 Predictions

Best Picture

“1917”

1917 is the only epic-grade film in this category this year. That does not mean that it should win this award. Why it should win is because of what it captures and presents to the viewer. What is on-screen took a lot of effort to plant, storyboard, and film. There is old Hollywood magic in 1917, especially the barn / plane scene and in the trials of the main protagonist. I don’t see any other film beating this film though Joker and Marriage Story, if 1917 weren’t present, would have been serious contenders.

Best Director

Sam Mendes, “1917” 1917 was the most difficult movie to actually film than any of the films in the Best Film category this year. Many of 1917‘s scenes are incredible ambitious and complex, with hundreds if not thousands of things happening coterminous. For that reason, I believe Sam Mendes is the hands down favorite for this award.

Best Actor

Joaquin Phoenix, “Joker” Joaquin Phoenix is going to win the Oscar for his performance as Arthur Fleck / Joker at the Oscar. I knew that months ago. From the moment Joker ended, I knew no else could or would come close to Phoenix’s performance. The skill it took to pull off that performance, especially that forced laughter that comes from Fleck, showed the depth of acting ability Phoenix possesses.

Best Actress

Renée Zellweger, “Judy” I think the best performances are those were the actor disappear into the character that they are playing so that though you are still seeing the actor or actresses in question, you as a viewer have lost sight of them as the character that they are portraying is in the forefront. Denzel Washington did that in American Gangster, Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight. Zellweger did that in Judy.

Original Screenplay

“Parasite,” Bong Joon Ho, Han Jin Won The momentum is behind Parasite this awards season and it has been for months. One of the reasons why Parasite is praised is because of its screenplay, and the way the film evolves. That will be rewarded at this year’s Oscars. If Parasite doesn’t win, it will probably be Marriage Story and if not that, Knives Out.

International Feature

“Parasite,” South Korea

Parasite, without a doubt, will win the Oscar for International Feature. The other nominated films are mute when it comes to awards buzz leading into this awards ceremony. Parasite has already been winning best international/foreign film at award ceremonies leading into tonight’s award show.

Visual Effects

“1917” Star Wars is Star Wars and Avengers is Avengers. Nothing in those films, with their outstanding effects, brought anything new to the table. What you saw in the previous films is what you saw in the current films. 1917 will be the winner in this category. Specific scenes, like the protagonist crossing the bridge and what happens during and after that, make the film stand out in this category.

Production Design

“1917”

Cinematography

“1917,” Roger Deakins Camera placement and how shots are captured is very important. Director Terrence Malick knows this and so does cinematographer Roger Deakins.

Sound Mixing

“1917”

Sound Editing

 “1917”
